Weetabix has caused quite the tizz on Twitter by suggesting a new way of serving the breakfast fave... topped with beans.

Traditionally the breakfast cereal is served with milk, yoghurt or fruit, but the social media bods at Weetabix have decided to switch things up by suggested you try the wheaty biscuits covered in beans.

“Why should bread have all the fun, when there's Weetabix? Serving up @HeinzUK Beanz on bix for breakfast with a twist,” read a tweet by the brand.

The suggestion prompted some pretty extreme reactions with plenty of major brands including: Dominoes, Amazon, Youtube, Tinder, Lidl, Sainsbury’s and Google.

Even the NHS and the British and US embassies had a take in on the controversial combination.

“The tweet that should come with a health warning,” the NHS tweeted, while the US Embassy expressed that the pairing was not the US-UK “collaboration we were hoping for”.

To which the British embassy responded with: “Strong opinion from the nation that makes tea in a microwave.”

Other large companies also joined in the Twitter teasing with Lidl joking: “Babe are u ok? You've hardly touched your Weetabix and beans!” and Weetabix responding that they were “just about to tuck in, babes”.

“Even we wouldn’t do this,” joked Innocent drinks. “We’re not monsters!”

Meanwhile, consumer watchdog Which? chimed in that this particularly combo was not “Which? recommended”, with Weetabix firing back that it was “Weetabix recommended though.”

While Sainsbury’s offered a take hooked to the Jackie Weaver viral parish council meeting.

But not everyone was horrified by the flavour pairing, in fact for some it seems beans and cereal is a bit of a dream combination.

For the majority though, the thought of beans and breakfast cereal was a flavour combo step too far.

The social media furore prompted the Beanz boffins at Heinz to issue their own response to the potential flavour combination.

Matt Mill, marketing lead at Heinz Beanz, said: “Well, the combination of two of the country’s most loved breakfast foods has certainly bean causing quite a stir on social media! And who are we to judge how people serve their Beanz? But if you ask us, Heinz Beanz on Weetabix is a winner for a protein-filled start to the day. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

“We strongly believe that our Beanz taste great with everything, whether this be Weetabix, on toast, or with your roast dinner, we believe Beanz are a delicious addition to any meal.

“So, although there’s currently no official partnership between Heinz and Weetabix at the moment, never say never. Weeta-Beanz, anyone?”

This isn’t the first time Weetabix has suggested a unique combination to up the ante on your breakfast.

Earlier this week, the company suggested people might like to try the cereal with a spread of Marmite on top.

“Love it or hate it, we’ve gone there! Weetabix can be enjoyed all sorts of ways, so here’s Marmite on a buttered bix,” the tweet read.

“We reckon, one of our best pairings yet. What do you think?”

Of course, this prompted equal horror from the Twitter collective.
