If you’re not yet aware of the name Halima Aden, you might want to start paying attention. Because the 19-year-old model and Muslim refugee is firmly on the ones-to-watch list.

Last night, she made headlines by making her catwalk debut in Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 5 fashion show. Clad in a floor length fur coat (fake we hope, but with Kanye who knows?), black pointed boots and her hijab, which shouldn’t be a big deal but is thanks to the fact that it’s still pretty rare to see a model sporting one at NYFW.

IMG Models, the agency who now represents Halima, tweeted a video of the model swishing down the catwalk and boy did the Somali-American rock it.

It’s not the first time Halima has broken down barriers in modelling. Last year she became the first Miss Minnesota contestant to compete in a hijab and a burkini.

Sadly Halima didn’t end up winning the crown, but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t a winner in other ways. Not only did she put herself out there, but she also stood up for a religious custom that many people don’t understand or accept. And for that she has to be applauded. As Cosmo revealed Halima “hoped her participation would serve as a reminder that beauty comes in many different forms.”

Since the pageant she was snapped up by IMG models and quickly went on to appear in CR Fashion Book. It was proof the 19-year-old had come a long way from the refugee camp in Kenya where she was born.

The first of her family to move to the US, Halima is now a student at Saint Cloud University in Minnesota. So you know if she doesn’t take over the fashion world, which we firmly expect her to, she’ll have a career to fall back on.

Keep breaking down those boundaries Halima. We’re looking forward to seeing what you do next.
