From Esquire

The last trailer for Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker landed a couple of days ago, and it packed a lot of blink-and-you'll-miss-it nods and references to other films in the saga. Which is nice. Always good to have some winks and nudges for the completists.

But what if they're not just there for completists? What if they're vital clues to how the saga will wrap itself up? These are the five moments most likely to become pieces of the jigsaw which will fall into place. If you want to go in completely fresh then you might want to avoid this, but obviously at this point we've no idea what's a spoiler, and what is just the ravings of a lunatic.

Rey did a lot of scrambling around husks of ships when she was stuck on Jakku picking up odds and ends in return for food, and she's back at it again in the new trailer. It could be a flashback, but look at that pillar behind her. It looks a lot like the one Obi Wan Kenobi clambers around in the original Star Wars, doesn't it? A popular interpretation is that Rey and Kylo Ren are called to the wreck of the second Death Star by the Emperor as part of his masterplan.

That piece of doomy narration from the Emperor has been pored over. Currently, the thinking is that this isn't about the gang coming together – Finn, Rey, Poe Dameron et al – but Rey and Kylo Ren. They represent the two sides of the Force, and the Emperor intends to use them both to master the Force as a whole.

You'll recall that when we last saw the Emperor, as he hurtled down a ventilation shaft at the end of Return of the Jedi, he was an incredibly wrinkly but normal-sized man. Now, though, the cloaked figure who the trailer implies is the Emperor is huge. It's a man mountain. One explanation is that his mass is down to the extensive life support systems used to keep him going, in the manner of Darth Vader and Darth Maul. If you'd not been keeping up with the Clone Wars TV series, Maul now has metal spider legs, much like Kenneth Branagh's in the Will Smith vehicle Wild Wild West.

Those old Star Destroyers

That armada of ships breaking out of the ice on the iceberg planet aren't the Star Destroyers we've seen the First Order use – they're a throwback to The Empire Strikes Back and the Empire's ships. The theory runs that the Emperor is back, but he thinks the First Order is rubbish compared to his mighty empire, so he's had those ships squirrelled away under the ice for a rainy day and intends to use them to flatten first the Resistance, then the First Order too.

A lot has been made of C-3PO's Dobby-esque farewell to the gang, and particularly whether he should really be getting all misty-circuited over his pals from the new trilogy when they've not even been hanging out for that long. However, there's a good chance that Poe asks what he's doing after C-3PO's been glitching or away with the fairies, and that the golden nerd has actually been taking a last spin through his memories of Luke, Han and Leia before shutting down or going for a factory reset.
