Versus Versace fails to impress with tired clothes, super thin models and a lacklustre front row

All eyes were on Donatella Versace’s first solo outing for Versus in almost a decade.

But it seemed the legendary designer had focused her attention on her main Versace line, leaving Versus at the bottom of her to-do list.

Versus’ previous collaborator, Zayn Malik, had at least ensured a star-studded front row and top model line-up. This time round, the huge speakers surrounding the derelict-looking space created more noise than the show itself.

The only familiar faces walking proved to be Adwoa Aboah along with a whole line of too-thin models that have cropped up on the Paris Fashion Week catwalks many a time.

It’s an odd choice to make considering the recent ‘ban’ of size zero models by LVMH and Kering; the companies behind brands including Gucci, Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton.

Not only did Donatella cast girls that fell on the skinnier side, she amplified just how thin they were through minuscule designs including teeny tiny knickers and skimpy bras.

Lack of size diversity aside, the rest of the collection seemed tired and old too. Versus-branded chokers made an appearance at a time when the necklaces are dying a slow and painful death.

A check extremely similar to Burberry’s played out on loose tailored suits that have been ramming high street stores for months.

Signatures from previous Versus collaborators turned out to be the most interesting part with Christopher Kane’s neon green and wave edges showing up again and again.

The theme, however, was unclear. Whether it was a celebration of previous Versus shows or a splurge of everything that entered Donatella’s mind (horsey prints, cowboy boots, fishnet dresses and bucket hats all had their turn), the result was a show that seemed as if it had been designed by three or four separate people.

For one of the supposed highlights of this season’s London Fashion Week, it can only be described as one thing: disappointing.
