Vernon Kay said he doesn't know how he and Alex Jones are presenters, following chaos that unfolded on The One Show last night.

The presenting duo were back on the sofa to front a packed show, which consisted of interviews with Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, and actresses Naomi Ackie and Toni Collette.

Thing got off to an awkward start when Alex's earring suddenly fell out, prompting Vernon to quickly go onto the floor to retrieve it.

Minutes later, the presenters were forced to apologise for Toni's "potty mouth" after she said "s**t" during their conversation.

After she repeated the word again, Ant, Dec, and Naomi struggled to contain their laughter.

Reflecting on the episode on his BBC Radio 2 show on Thursday, Vernon, 50, said it was "absolute carnage" in the studio.

He told listeners: "Last night's The One Show was definitely not that perfect.

"It so's funny, Ant and Dec, are still just two mischievous young gentlemen.

"From the moment we went on air, Alex's earring fell out and I'm skewing around looking for the earring back.

"Matt's [Allwight] doing Watchdog, it's all serious, there's absolute carnage going on around him, I don't know how he kept a straight face."

Vernon went on to say such unexpected moments are "what broadcasting is all about" and went on to praise Alex for the way she handled it.

"Alex Jones is one of the best, she is without a doubt one of the best," he added.

"She is the essence of cool, calm and collected, I mean I don't know how we get on air, we're both so laidback.

"We're like, 'Yeah it'll be fine, it'll be fine, it's live tele, people understand'.

"So, thanks to The One Show team for last night."

It's not the first time Alex has experienced an awkward moment on the show this week.

On Tuesday, she and her co-host Clara Amfo appeared to be stunned after guest David Walliams made a joke about Keir Starmer.

"I was at school with, Keir Starmer. And he gave me a detention and it was Christmas time and it was really cold and he turned off the heating," he shared, laughing.

"I did go to the same school as Keir Starmer, but actually we didn't meet each other."

Many viewers were quick to comment on the moment on the platform X, with one describing it as "pure chaos".

The One Show continues tonight at 7pm on BBC One.
