Trinny has found the knitted dress of the autumnTrinny London

If you're anything like us, you start hunting for jumper dresses the moment that summer turns to autumn.

Cosy and comfortable yet also effortlessly chic, a good knitted dress is a hard-working hero that you'll wear on repeat all winter, teamed with everything from trainers to knee-high boots, blazers to trench coats.

But with so many styles to choose from, both designer and on the high street, it can be hard to know which to add to your capsule wardrobe. So, if you only want to buy one? Make it this Cos knit dress.

Championed by Trinny Woodall in her weekly 'Friday Twinning' styling series on Instagram, it comes in either pink or green marl. Described by the fashion guru and founder of Trinny London as "equal parts comfortable and chic", its super flattering for all body shapes and a doddle to dress up or down. Its luxe, minimalist cut feels timeless, too, making it a smart investment buy.

"This transitional piece is also fabulously versatile," says Trinny. "It's free-flowing but warm enough to wear when the temperature dips – perfect to throw on first thing and oh-so-simple to zhuzh up for the evening."

In the video, Trinny and her video director Chloe Dall'Olio can be seen showing us how to style this dress. For daytime, they pair it with chunky white trainers (Trinny's are from Russell & Bromley), cross-body bags and oversized sunglasses.

"When you're wearing something that's slightly hugging but also shapeless, a cross-body is good because it gives a bit of lift to your boobs and defines your waist," says Trinny.

For night, they amp it up with statement gold jewellery, tonal shiny heels and a dramatic smokey eye – and it looks like a totally different dress.

Our editor in chief, Sarah Tomczak, actually beat Trinny to it with this spot: earlier this month, she included the same dress in her edit of the edit of the autumn fashion trends she's buying into this season.

Listing it as one of her favourite jumper dresses to shop now, Sarah said: "I'm drawn to this dress for its colour and texture that sets it apart from the crowd. I'd wear it with knee-high cream boots."

Sarah loves a knitted dress, describing the wardrobe staple as "the ultimate in comfort [which] keeps you warm and cosy, but miraculously feels very put together too".

So, this Cos knit dress not only gets Trinny's stamp of approval, but our stylish Sarah's too. That surely makes it one to snap up immediately?
