Ed Kelce has been doing his research on Taylor Swift as the singer continues her budding relationship with his son, Travis Kelce.

In his first interview since Travis, 34, and Swift, 33, went public with their new romance, Ed tells PEOPLE he's been watching interviews and appearances with the "Bejeweled" singer in an effort to get to know her better.

The father-of-two — he and Donna Kelce are also parents to Philadelphia Eagles center Jason — says he's "gone back and listened to interviews she's done over the years" since meeting Swift "because it gives you a sense of what a person is like."

Specifically, "she did a commencement address at NYU and I thought that was pretty cool," Ed shares, explaining that watching Swift speak in interviews "just confirms my initial impression of her," which is that "she's a very genuine, down-to-earth" person.

"She's America's girl," adds Ed, who was first seen with Swift in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium on Oct. 12, during the Kansas City Chiefs home game against the Denver Broncos.

Donna has also become a national treasure since both of her sons competed in the 2023 Super Bowl, and Ed says she's "enjoying" the newfound fame.

"She's America's football mom," he says, adding that NFL fans have embraced Travis and Jason's mom more than they have him. "I think there's no shortage of football dads in this country. I think the moms got a leader here with Donna. We'll just let it go with that."

During the busy NFL season, Ed says he talks to Travis and Jason "a couple times a week," which typically includes a post-game text to talk about their performances.

"I'm not shy about calling them out if I saw something that maybe could have been done better, and they appreciate that," says Ed.

"As good as [Jason and Travis] both are at their respective positions," he says the "thing that makes them special" is their consistent desire to win.

Ed explains, "They're always looking at how they can get a little bit better and how they can contribute to the team. The ultimate goal is another win, and that's more important to them than accolades or records or any of that."

Ed's latest comments about Swift come after he shared a "very special" observation from his first meeting with the singer.

"We're sitting in the suite, she gets up and in the front room, she gets up to go get a drink or something and she starts picking up empty bottles, cans, plates that are scattered around," the dad shared. "Because in the suites everybody gets stuff and you empty it down wherever you can."

Ed continued, "And I'm just thinking, I don't think she got the diva memo. She didn't get the spoiled musician. She doesn't know how to pull that off. And that really to me said a whole lot."
