While delivering a speech at the Fortune Global Forum in New York City on October 12, Tom Brady reflected on fatherhood, even admitting that he hasn’t always gotten things right during the candid convo. (FYI, the former footballer is the father to three children: John “Jack” Edward Thomas, whom he shares with ex Bridget Moynahan, as well as Benjamin Rein and Vivian Lake, whom he shares with his ex-wife Gisele Bündchen.)

“Being a parent is probably the hardest job all of us have,” Tom began during the discussion. “And we screw up a lot and I’ve screwed up a lot as a parent. So, I don’t want to seem like I’m some expert in parenting, because I’m certainly not that. I have three amazing kids. I try to be dependable and consistent for them.”

The seven-time Super Bowl champ then confessed that he feels his parenting style can be traced back to how his own parents acted toward him—something he mused was a “blessing” for him. “When I was that long shot as a kid, who was the backup quarterback on a freshman team,” he recalled before adding, “they never said, ‘Man, don’t do that. It’s gonna be too hard. Let’s do something different. Let’s think about another backup plan’ They kinda said, ‘You know what? Go for it. Whatever you wanna be, go for it.’”

In turn, Tom has adopted a similar approach—specifically, with his oldest son, who is 6’5’’ and wants to pursue a basketball career. “Unfortunately he jumps as high as I do,” Tom dished. “But I tell him, ‘Dude, you’re gonna be a stud.’ I said, ‘Wait till you hit your growth spurt, you’re gonna be jumping higher, you’re gonna be dunkin.’ And whether he does or not, who cares? But I want him to know that his dad’s got his back.”

Despite all the encouragement the former footballer demonstrates, however, he still recognizes that “to be a boy, it sucks to be Tom Brady’s son, in so many ways.” “My kids naturally are gonna be faced with their own challenges, and they gotta figure out how to overcome them, too,” he revealed. “And I’ll be there to support them a lot like my parents did. And I’ll be learning along the way right there with them.”
