This Morning gender-neutral toilets debate sparks huge row

Watch: 'This Morning' gender-neutral toilet debate sparks huge row

This Morning guests Julia Hartley-Brewer and Matthew Wright went head-to-head on today's show on the issue of gender-neutral toilets.

Journalist Julia insisted the concept of unisex loos was "woke nonsense" that neither men or women want.

But TV presenter Matthew argued that gender-neutral toilets were just like your family bathroom at home.

Hosts Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield chaired the debate as the fireworks started.

Julia argued: "It is moving the world backwards, I don't know anyone who'd want gender-neutral toilets.

"Women don't want them, men don't want them.

"My husband would be horrified to be forced to go to the loo with women there.

"I've got a 15-year-old daughter, I want her to know when she goes into the toilet that she's in a safe place.

"There's not going to be a man in a cubicle, there's not going to be a man with his tackle out.

"This is ridiculous, this is about pandering to some woke nonsense... and I think the vast majority... don't want this."

But Matthew hit back, taking issue at Julia deciding what men think.

He argued: "I don't know about Julia, but I have a gender-neutral toilet at home.

"Men and women use it freely, and I've also taken issue being told by Julia about what men think.

"I don't have a problem," Matthew continued before Julia interrupted: "Do you have strange men in your house?"

The row sparked a huge debate on twitter, with users offering their views.

One tweeted in support of Julia, writing: "You don't have a problem with a mixed toilet because you are not a woman Matthew."

User Jen tweeted: "I avoid public toilets like the plague because they're revolting. But if I really need to use one, I really don't want to be sharing it with strange men."

While another fan tweeted in support of Matthew's views saying: "I couldn't care less whether they're gender neutral toilets as long as we all have somewhere to pee. I think it's important to make facilities accessible to everyone no matter what their gender identity is."

Although gender-neutral toilets aren't to everyone's taste, they're particularly important for trans and non-binary people who may feel uncomfortable in gendered bathrooms. As awareness improves of the issues trans people face, gender-neutral toilets are likely to become more widespread.
