People often have preconceptions of what a person with tattoos will be like and research shows that getting inked could hurt your chances of getting a job.

But as London-based photographer Alan Powdrill proves, people with skin art come in all shapes and sizes.

“I was 17. I hid the first few from my parents for many years and by the time they found out they knew this was going to be my life,” says Philip, 27, Southend-on-Sea. [Photo: Instagram/Alan Powdrill]

As part of his new COVERED photo series, Powdrill has photographed a number of tattoo-covered people – both with and without their clothes on.

The pics hammer home that although a person may be covered from head-to-toe in tattoos, it isn’t always noticeable.

"I love being different and everyday I’m asked about them. Good tattoos aren’t cheap, cheap tattoos are not good,” says Izzy, 48, Maidstone. [Photo: Instagram/Alan Powdrill]

"If I ever forget who I am I take my clothes off and look in the mirror and find out who I am again,” says Chris, 25, Coventry. [Photo: Instagram/Alan Powdrill]

“I’m loving how they change as my body gets older and the creases and wrinkles change how they look When I’ve got no space below my neck I’ll stop,” says Ness, 40, Crawley. [Photo: Instagram/Alan Powdrill]

From a man who waited until he was 51 to get his first tattoo to a 66-year-old guy who got his first ink when he was 14 and has no plans to stop, the series shares some truly spectacular skin art – and the stories behind it all.

“I love the fact I’m middle aged, have a professional job, am surrounded by straight people and I have ‘No Fucking Way’ tattooed on my chest,” says 59-year-old Bill, who Powdrill captured for the series.

Chris, 25, says his tats help him stay true to himself. “If I ever forget who I am I take my clothes off and look in the mirror and find out who I am again.”
