The Latest Fitness Trend Lets You Unleash Your Inner Ariel

Hands up who’s been slightly obsessed with Mermaids since Ariel first put in an under the sea appearance? Us too! Not only did her lustrious locks mean she nailed it in the beauty stakes, those abs of steal gave us bikini body envy (not just anyone could rock a seashell bra top y’know!)
And we’re not the only ones who’ve recognised that mermaids are total fitness goals. According to Cosmopolitan Hotel Del Coronado, a chic resort in San Diego, California, is tapping into mermaid #fitspo. They recently launched mermaid fitness classes where you can workout like Ariel and co.
Each 45 minute class involves hotel guests slipping on a sparkly tail before learning to swim like a mermaid by rhythmically moving their legs together.
And it’s not just a glorified excuse to splash around in the water for a bit, the mermaid fitness class is a genuine workout involving working your arm muscles using beach balls, doing ab exercises to strengthen your core and engaging muscles in a way you wouldn’t get to do in your usual legs, bums and tums.

The practice is the brainchild of hotel fitness instructor Veronica Rohan.
“It’s circuit training mixed with an ab workout on the side of the pool,” she tells Well and Good. “You’ll swim laps to get your heart rate up, and I also included standing stationary movements, like squats and arm exercises with a beach ball.”
Though San Diego is a little far to travel for a gym sesh, if you fancy giving it a go UK-based Mermaids UK is planning to start offering their own mer-workout courses soon.
