The Duchess Of Cambridge Dons Princess Diana’s Beloved Tiara For Diplomatic Do

The Duchess of Cambridge glammed up for a diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace last night, opting to wear one of Princess Diana’s favourite tiaras.

Kate was photographed wearing the late Princess of Wales’ tiara as she arrived at the event, clad in the very same powder blue Alexander McQueen dress that she wore to the same function two years before.

Despite the access she has to drool-worthy jewellery, the 33-year-old even opted to don the exact same pair of chandelier diamond earrings, lent to her by the Queen.

Clearly, her people decided the outfit was a winning look and opted to repeat it – with the exception of the tiara. In 2013, Kate wore the Lotus Flower headpiece to the diplomatic do, while last night she went for the Lover’s Knot tiara.

Like most of the royal family’s bling, this piece has been around a long time. The Queen’s grandmother, Queen Mary, designed it in 1914 after being inspired by a piece owned by Mary’s grandmother, Princess Augusta. The Queen then passed it on to Princess Diana in 1981 as a gift on her wedding day and she was spotted wearing it at numerous functions during her lifetime.

It’s definitely one of the less subtle tiaras owned by the royal family. The beautiful headpiece reaches quite a height and boasts 19 diamond arches, each cradling an oriental pearl drop.

Last night marked the fourth time that the Duchess of Cambridge has worn a tiara – so it still must be a novelty for the mum-of-two.

The Lotus Flower that Kate wore to years ago resurfaced in October, when Kate wore it to her first state banquet to celebrate the arrival of Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan.

The priceless pearl and diamond piece first appeared in the 1920s, as part of the Queen Mother’s glittering collection. In 1959, the tiara was given by the Queen Mother to Princess Margaret, but it passed back into the Royal Collection after her death.

The only other tiara she’s worn is the breathtaking Cartier Halo tiara, which she donned when she married Prince William in 2011.
