Taylor Swift Just Responded To Reviews Of 'The Tortured Poets Department' In The Best Possible Way
It’s the album that has broken records continually since its release — and continues to do so. In the four days since its release on April 19, 2024, Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department has become Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day, exceeding 200 million streams, while the album’s title single, Fortnight feat. Post Malone, became the streaming platform’s most-streamed song in a single day.
And revelling in the (almost) unanimously positive response to The Tortured Poets Department, Swift has confirmed that she is indeed reading the reviews of her feted 11th studio album. On Sunday evening, the Cruel Summer singer shared three reviews of the album to her Instagram story, all of which she captioned with lyrics from her newly-released material.

Swift initially shared Rolling Stones’ glowing review of TTPD with the lyrics, ‘And that’s the closest I’ve come to my heart exploding,’ before going on to share The Times’ similarly glowing response to the record. To the publication’ five star review, the star wrote ‘These chemicals hit me like white wine’, and finally, she shared The Independent’s review with the words, ‘Everything we know understands why it’s meant to be.’
Not all critics have shared positive notes of Swift’s latest creation though. The New York Times called TTPD an ‘uneven LP’, while Paste Magazine posted a scathing review of the record under an anonymous byline, citing safety concerns as the reason for not revealing the author's identity. Writing on X, formerly known as Twitter, in an editor's note, the publication stated, 'There is no byline on this review due to how, in 2019 when Paste reviewed Lover, the writer was sent threats of violence from readers who disagree with the work.' The review notes that the album's 'title track features some of Swift’s worst lyricism to date.'
Swift's legion of loyal and devoted fans, affectionately referred to as Swifties, have jumped to the singer's defence. 'Where is the alleged "review" of the actual album? This is just pure ragebait vomit lol,' wrote one angry fan, while another mused, 'We want real journalist back not this gossip article.'
Despite the scattering of less-than-glowing reviews, according to Metacritic, TTPD was an instant hit with audiences, selling 1.4 million copies on its release day and surpassing the record set by 1989 (Taylor's version) to become her biggest US album to date.
