In between wrapping up her upcoming album, So Close to What, and preparing for her Miss Possessive tour that kicks off this March, pop singer Tate McRae has been crafting her alter ego. “I don’t really know what the switch is,” McRae tells ELLE.com. “Any time I’m in a studio, step on stage, or get onto a music video set, there’s a five-second reset where I black out and turn into this confident, fearless person.”

But when McRae isn’t stepping into another persona, she likes to keep it simple, especially when it comes to her skin. That’s why her new partnership with NeutrogenaMcRae is starring in the brand’s latest Hydro Boost campaign—feels like kismet.

“It’s such an honor to partner with [Neutrogena],” McRae says. “Growing up with the brand and seeing all of the pictures and the billboards, getting to be a part of it feels surreal and so authentic.” McRae has been a longtime fan of the Hydro Boost line in particular. She admits the Hydro Boost moisturizer was the first skin care product she ever purchased with her own money, and she’s been loyal to the formula ever since. These days, the product is one of the most important parts of McRae’s prep before heading out on stage.

Ahead of every concert, McRae does her signature natural, glowy makeup herself, starting with a two-step skin care routine: the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel cleanser and the aforementioned Hydro Boost Water Gel moisturizer. “You always want to have a smooth base before you start applying a million random things,” she says. “Keeping my skin care simple and clean feels like a breath of fresh air on my skin. Then I can play around and do whatever I want with my lip and eye makeup.”

True fans know that McRae doesn’t just play around when it comes to makeup. Late last year, the singer’s dance for her song “It’s ok, I’m ok” went viral on TikTok; the accompanying music video even referenced Beyoncé’s own iconic video for “Crazy in Love.” People all over the world learned the choreography, and now concertgoers often perform the dance along with McRae at her shows. According to the artist, the moment marked a huge shift in her career, “It’s just so fun to watch everybody do the dance,” she says. “It’s obviously the crowd’s favorite part.”

Now, with so many new projects and performances on the horizon, McRae is prioritizing any moments of calm she can find, whether it be Epsom salt baths after a long day of rehearsal; a journaling session before bed; or a gentle nighttime skin care routine.

“We’ve all been there—those moments where your brain just won’t stop spiraling, and the last thing you need is to be overthinking messing up your skin,” McRae says. “That’s why I’m obsessed with Hydro Boost. It keeps my skin hydrated and is the perfect reminder that skin care doesn’t have to be complicated to work.”

Plus, with this new campaign, we might be able to answer the question that McRae poses in the title of her album. The star is So Close to What? Dewy, moisturized skin.
