Why Surface series 2 the most underrated thriller Apple TV+

Looking for a psychological thriller to keep you guessing? We're calling it, Apple TV+'s Surface is the most underrated weeknight watch right now - and series 2 is as gripping as ever.

If you haven't seen series 1 and are coming to the show for the first time, the series follows a woman's quest to rebuild her life after a suicide attempt, and her struggle to understand all the things that led up to that moment. Intriguing, right?

Here's everything you need to know about Surface series 1 and 2, and why it's the most underrated show to get on your radar right now.

Surface has a brilliant British lead

The show's lead character is Sophie, a British woman living in California. She's played brilliantly by British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who trained at the legendary RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) and has starred in The Morning Show, alongside Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, as well as in Marvel's Loki with Tom Hiddleston.

There's a killer team behind it

If Gugu wasn't enough to sway you, you'll be impressed to know that the executive producers of the show were part of the talented team behind Big Little Lies and Little Fires Everywhere. And the director, Sam Miller, also directed the multi award-winning I May Destroy You - all three are also gripping female-fronted shows, so Surface is in good hands.

It's about memory loss (and more...)

Fans of The Tourist starring Jamie Dornan may be able to scratch an itch with this series, as Surface also deals with themes of memory loss, leaving Sophie (and the viewers) wondering whether everything - or anything at all - is exactly as it seems.

Like Jamie's character, Sophie has no idea what happened in her past or what led her to where she is, and is on a quest to uncover the secrets of her own life.

It keeps you guessing

In season one, we're trying to find out if Sophie really did try to take her own life or whether something darker was going on - was she pushed by a mystery man? Can she really trust her own husband? Does he know more than he's letting on? Is Sophie even her real name? So. many. questions.

Surface series 2 explores Sophie's back story

In season two, we see Sophie leave San Fransisco and head to London to try and find out the truth about her past. While series one ends on a cliffhanger, the new series allows us to go back to Sophie's roots and find out more about what led her to life in the US, where we met her at the start of season one.

In the latest series, Sophie believes her mother was murdered when she was young, and her quest to learn more leads her into the depths of the uber-rich Huntley family. What information are they hiding about her mother? Could they be dangerous? Will Sophie ever learn all the secrets about her life? You'll have to watch to find out...
