Strictly Come Dancing star Gorka Marquez shared the news that he spent a night in hospital earlier this week.

The professional dancer posted a series of selfies on Instagram which show him lying in a hospital bed, hooked up to some wires and looking disappointed.

"I was looking forward to Christmas at Home but that was interesting 24h in hospital," he wrote, joking that his fiancée Gemma Atkinson had suggested that he was trying to avoid wrapping Christmas presents.

"Everything is okay and I am back home having cookies and cuddles off my little nurse," he added. "Thanks to the Doctors and Nurses at Fairfield Hospital for being so lovely to me. FELIZ NAVIDAD!!!"

The dancer also shared a photo of himself holding a packet sandwich in his hospital bed, before contrasting it with a snap of himself on his own sofa at home enjoying a festive treat and looking much happier.

Gorka received lots of support from his fellow Strictly dancers, with Katya Jones, Amy Dowden and Jowita Przystal all sending get well soon messages.

Gorka's Strictly 2021 celebrity partner, Hollyoaks actress Katie McGlynn, also sent her love, commenting: "Noo! Hope you're okay," while this year's runner-up contestant, Great British Bake Off's John Whaite, wrote: "I hope you are ok Gorksybabes."

Gorka isn't the only Strictly star to have made a trip to the hospital recently, as contestant Dan Walker has revealed that he injured himself earlier in the series by running into a revolving door.

Gorka's fiancée Gemma, meanwhile, has been speaking about her relationship with the dancer, who she met on Strictly back in 2017 when she was a contestant.

Following the birth of their daughter, Mia, in 2019, Gemma has revealed that the couple would "love a sibling" for her when she gets a bit older, and she also addressed their eventual wedding plans following their engagement in February this year.

"We've done zero planning with all the Covid stuff," she said. "We've twice almost gone into the registry office and just done it but I don't think our families would be very happy. They want a good party!"

Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One.
