Stop scrolling! Why Netflix’s “perfect” Scandi crime drama is your next binge-watch
For fans of Scandi Noir, The Åre Murders, Netflix's new Swedish crime drama is officially your next binge-watch. Poised to become a major hit, it's got all the hallmarks of the perfect Nordic thriller; cosy knit jumpers, quiet little towns and dark, brooding landscapes - and it's been released just in time for the weekend!
The story follows Hanna Ahlander, a police officer who decides to leave Stockholm behind after she finds herself suspended from duty and dumped by her partner. Hanna heads to her sister's holiday home in the chocolate-box town of Åre - blissful, it seems - only things aren't quite as picturesque as she expected...
The drama unfolds when 17-year-old Amanda goes missing on the same night Hanna arrives in town. Hanna can't help but start investigating the case, despite being met with resistance from local police officer, Daniel Lindskog. And when Amanda's body is found in mysterious circumstances, it's her cue to join the understaffed local police force.
Although the mistrust between Lindskog and his new colleague is clear to see, it seems they might be more similar than either wishes to admit. Hanna is running away from her personal problems back in Stockholm, while Daniel has a "tough family situation" of his own. Will they be able to work through their issues to find out what happened to Amanda and catch the person responsible? We'd highly recommend tuning in to find out!
The show features an ensemble cast including Carla Sehn, Kardo Razzazi, Charlie Gustafsson, Francisco Sobrado and Amalia Holm, and is based on two popular books by international-bestselling author, Viveca Sten. Hidden in Snow and Hidden in the Shadows have each received rave reviews on Amazon with the Swedish author's tales being described as "gripping" and full of suspense - much like the series itself.
So, if you're missing your fix of Sarah Lund's jumper collection from The Killing, it's worth adding The Åre Murders to your watch list this weekend. You might even find you end up doing nothing else!
All five episodes of The Åre Murders are available to stream on Netflix now.
