How to stay on top of your fitness during winter

During the winter months, it can be tempting to watch movies all day while eating comfort food.

However, exercising throughout winter is just as important for your physical and mental health as the rest of the year.

Ali Malik, Personal Trainer and Founder of Fit Labs Kensington, has shared how to keep yourself motivated when it comes to exercising during the dark and cold winter months.

Indoor trampoline workouts

Not only is this a great form of exercise, but it is a fun way to switch up your workout routine.

"Invest in a mini-trampoline (rebounder) and use it for high-energy workouts," Ali recommends. "Bouncing on a trampoline is not only fun but also a great cardio exercise that's easy on the joints."

Embrace the cold exposure

The cold weather doesn't have to hold you back, it can be what motivates you.

"Use the cold weather as a motivation to engage in cold exposure activities like cold showers, ice baths, or outdoor winter swimming," the personal trainer advises. "It can boost your mood, increase energy, and improve your immune system."

Night-time glow yoga

Try to think outside of the box when you are coming up with winter workouts, as fun exercises tend to be more motivating.

"Host a glow-in-the-dark yoga or fitness session with blacklight and fluorescent clothing," Ali suggests. "It's a unique and motivating way to enjoy indoor workouts with a twist."

Dance parties

Dance-based workouts are a great form of cardio as well as a fun social activity to do with your friends.

"Host or attend indoor dance parties or dance-based fitness classes. Dancing is a great way to stay active and warm during the winter while having a blast," Ali says.

Incentive-based workouts

Creating a rewards-based system is often an effective way to get through tough workouts.

"Gamify your workouts by setting up a reward system. For every workout you complete, treat yourself to a small, healthy indulgence or purchase a winter-related item you've had your eye on," the expert states.

Ali concludes, "Remember to stay safe and dress appropriately for the winter weather, especially when engaging in outdoor activities."
