It’s spring at last, so we can turn down the heating, stash our wool coats away and enjoy more hours of sunshine.

But now that it’s here, that sunshine’s also highlighting something less pleasant in our homes; dirt.

It may feel like we kept up with the cleaning over winter (you remember scrubbing out the bath a few times), but considering there’s untouched dust covering everything, perhaps you didn’t keep up as thoroughly as you thought.

So it’s time for some spring cleaning, although how often should you clean different things? And what needs cleaning in the first place?

According to a guide by Good Housekeeping, here’s what you need to do in each room and how often.

The kitchen

Daily

Wash the dishes, wipe down the kitchen counters and table, sweep the floor and clean and sanitise the sink.

Weekly

Mop the floor, wipe down any appliances, clean the inside of the microwave, sanitise your kitchen sponges and toss any food that’s gone off.

Monthly

Clean your dishwasher and the filters of your washing machine and/or dryer.

Every 3-6 months

Wipe down the inside of your fridge, clean out your freezer, put some drain cleaner down the sink, clean your cooker’s hood and scrub the entire oven (you can do it).

Annually

Give the windows a deep clean.

The bedroom

Every 3-6 months

Clean under and behind any furniture, wash your pillows and duvet and vacuum your mattress.

Annually

Deep clean your carpet, upholstery and curtains, and deep clean those windows too.

The bathroom
