Spooky skeletons! Animal X-rays show what creepy critters look like on the inside

Spooky Halloween images show what some of the world’s best-loved animals look like on the inside, courtesy of experts at Oregon Zoo.

Every animal at the Zoo receives routine health exams, and often these checkups include X-rays. Digital radiology has proved a useful diagnostic tool and helped the zoo’s animal experts provide excellent health care.

But how do you X-ray a huge bear? Very carefully, of course — and with state-of-the-art equipment, funded largely by a donation from Banfield Pet Hospital. Smaller critters also require delicate care and attention to ensure they stay fit and healthy - as some of these patients include endangered species.

“With digital radiology, we can obtain X-ray results quickly and adjust the images afterward, reducing the need for anesthesia or long examinations,” said Dr. Carlos Sanchez, the zoo’s director of animal health. “We can also archive them for future comparisons, and share X-rays with consultants and veterinary teams from other zoos and aquariums.

“The clarity and detail of these images helps us provide the best health care for our patients. It also offers a unique view of wildlife.”
