Spinning, one of the most popular exercise classes for fat burning, can cause injuries similar those that occur following a car crash, according to new research. The high-intensity workout, which sees you cycle on the spot at different rates, is particularly dangerous for first-time spinners as it can result in rhabdomyolysis.

Rhabdomyolysis is a serious condition that is caused by an injured muscle, according to the American Journal of Medicine. It occurs from a lack of oxygen, which causes muscles to break down and release their contents into the bloodstream. In serious cases, this can lead to kidney failure or cardiac arrest.

The condition is usually found in victims who have suffered a crush injury, fall or a car crash, but can also occur as a direct result of spin classes, according to The Independent. This is because you are using two of your biggest muscles (the quadriceps and the gluteus maximus) at a very intense rate.

However, if you are a regular at the gym, then you probably don't need to cancel your next class just yet. For most people, rhabdomyolysis isn't an issue if your body is used to exercise.

For those who don't exercise regularly and then take part in a tough spin class or another high-intensity workout, the condition can cause serious side effects. Instead, doctors recommend that you start out more gently with a low-intensity option and then gently push your limits more as your body becomes used to working out.
