Sophie Robinson's take on the Unexpected Red Theory

Sophie Robinson, House Beautiful’s expert colour columnist, is on a mission to inspire us to bring more colour and pattern into our homes.

In our new Decorate With Confidence video series, interior designer Sophie offers styling ideas, practical advice and shopping buys to help bring the latest looks and trends to life in an easy, accessible way.

First up, Sophie lifts the lid on decorating with red. A bold, flamboyant and statement colour, red is having quite the moment in interior design, but as Sophie admits, it can be a tricky colour to use. Dissecting the viral 'unexpected red theory', Sophie takes us through the red colour spectrum and how varying shades can change the mood of a room, offering advice on how to use this primary colour in all its glory on walls, or sparingly as an accent in accessories or artwork.

From bright reds to russet tones, this 'disruptor' colour has traditionally been a popular choice for dining rooms to create an intimate, inviting space. It works equally well in a bathroom and Sophie shows us how she's incorporated her own pop of red by painting the outside of her rolltop bath to warm up what is typically seen as a sterile room.
