The small detail you might have missed about the Duchess of Cambridge's poppy

The Duchess of Cambridge visited the Imperial War Museum on Wednesday to learn about her family’s connection to the First World War.

Kate viewed moving letters relating to the deaths of three of her great-grandmother Olive’s brothers. Maurice, Lionel and Francis Lupton were killed in action over a period of three years; 1915, 1916 and 1917 respectively.

The Duchess, who seemed moved by the documents, wore a royal blue Jenny Packham dress, with a poppy pinned on the left, which has a special meaning.

The Women of The First World War brooch has been designed exclusively for the Centenary year. The Royal British Legion have created the £29.99 poppy dedicated to the memory of the courageous women, who served and lost their lives during the war.

It’s a subtle, yet touching tribute from Kate. Not only did her great-grandmother’s brothers fight in the war, but Olive and her younger sister Anne were both Voluntary Aid Detachment nurses with the British Red Cross during the War.

Olive Middleton (nee Lupton) married Richard Noel Middleton in 1914. Their son Peter was the father of Michael Middleton, and was grandfather to Kate and her siblings, Pippa and James.

Captain Peter Middleton was a Second World War Mosquito pilot, and Prince Philip’s co-pilot on a tour of South America in 1962. He died in 2010, aged 90, and Kate and Prince William attended his funeral.
