Sheer genius: how to wear transparent tights
The Fashion Awards 2024 on Monday night saw the industry’s great and good come together for one night only at London’s Royal Albert Hall to celebrate the biggest names in the business. Finding out “who won what” at the awards is always exciting – this year, Dame Margaret Barbour received a Special Recognition Award for outstanding contribution to the fashion industry and longstanding commitment to British excellence and innovation. But what we really love is, let’s face it, looking at everyone’s outfits.
While AJ Odudu, Billie Piper and Halle Bailey all dazzled on the red carpet, some stars were criticised for their slightly bizarre outfits – from Rita Ora’s bespoke grey Primark suit (yes, Primark) to Rihanna’s vintage Christian Lacroix icy blue fur ensemble and Ellie Goulding’s cream duvet coat dress (you have to admit, it does look super-cosy). But there was one trend that seemed to go unnoticed despite being worn by almost every celeb: the humble sheer black tight – the kind whose penchant to rip can only be stopped from turning into a full-on ladder by a quick application of clear nail varnish.
Forget ‘It’ bags or the latest party heels, it’s your tights that really matter now. So, how hip is your hosiery? Keep your opaques at the back of the drawer because this party season, the more see-through the better. In the past, transparent tights have been given a bad rap for being a bit granny-ish, but I think black 10-deniers look incredibly chic. They help partygoers feel more comfortable and not too exposed in shorter, thigh-skimming hemlines; elongate your legs if you’re wearing an LBD; and take the edge off bitterly cold temperatures (every little helps). If you’re looking to invest, my top tip is to look for ‘ladder-resistant’ sheer tights, otherwise keep a bottle of clear nail varnish handy. Best of luck, ladies!
