Thanks to its progressive attitude, brilliant characters and, well, Gillian Anderson, it's safe to say we're obsessed with Netflix's Sex Education. We lapped up the first series, desperately counted down to the release of the second season, and now we're ecstatic that a third instalment is on the way!
Here's everything we know about Sex Education Season 3, from release date to potential story lines and trailers and teaser pics.
What will happen in Sex Education season 3?
At the beginning of June, Asa Butterfield, aka Otis, tweeted, "Lemme just say, you lot aren’t ready for season 3, trust me."
He also revealed in an interview from January 2021 that the next series will not start where the second series left off (e.g. from the cliffhanger, where Otis admitted his feelings for Maeve in a voicemail, which was deleted by Isaac.)
"There's a bit of a time-jump since the season two cliffhanger," Asa told The Guardian. "Otis is back at school but he's got different things on his plate. He's grown up a bit and become slightly more sassy. It's been fun to portray his newfound charisma. Don't worry, though, he's still tragically awkward too."
He continued, "We got snapped by paparazzi while filming and people have been freaking out about Otis having a moustache. I can exclusively reveal it's not real.
"It's a stunt 'tache and thankfully it doesn't last the whole season. I don't think anyone could bear looking at that thing for long."
Who will star in Sex Education season 3?
The main gang will once again take centre stage (more about that later), Netflix have also confirmed three new incredible characters.
Girls actress Jemima Kirke "will play former Moordale student and new headmistress ‘Hope’ who plans to turn Moordale back into the pillar of excellence it’s always been."
Jason Isaacs (aka Lucius Malfoy!) is playing "‘Peter Groff’, Mr Groff’s more successful and not very modest older brother, who Mr Groff (Alistair Petrie) has been staying with in the wake of his separation from Mrs Groff."
Gender nonconforming recording artist and songwriter, Dua Saleh, meanwhile, is joining in their acting debut, playing "‘Cal’, a nonbinary student at Moordale, who instantly clashes with Hope’s new vision for the school."
Elsewhere, Netflix confirmed Otis (Asa Butterfield), Maeve (Emma Mackey), Otis’ mum Jean (Jillian Anderson), Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), Aimee (Aimee Wood), Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling) and Adam (Connor Swindells), as well as Ola (Patricia Allison) and her dad, Jakob ( Mikael Persbrandt) and Mr Groff (Alistair Petrie) will feature in the season 3.
Season 2 saw the introduction of various new characters, including Anne-Marie Duff as Maeve's mum Erin, Sami Outalbali as French student Rahim, Chinenye Ezeudu as Viv and George Robinson as Isaac.
When was Sex Education s3 confirmed?
It was a nerve-wracking time there, for a little while. Nothing had actually been confirmed. We were just crossing fingers and hoping. Thankfully in February 2020, Netflix announced that Sex Education will be back for a third season.
When will filming start for Sex Education season 3?
As of 9th September 2021, production officially started. Like many TV shows and films, coronavirus affected production of the Netflix show, which should have started filming back in April 2020.
Several first look images from the set of series three, taken by the show's very own Tanya Reynolds (who plays Lily Iglehart), were released in December 2020. The pictures show Ncuti Gatwa (Eric) sitting on a sofa reading through a script, and Patricia Allison (Ola) sitting on a patch of grass in the sun.
Lily dated each of the pictures and accompanied them with an adorable message to fans:
"Hi I'm Tanya Reynolds and I play Lily in Sex Education. I like to take photographs while we are waiting on set. I wanted to share some with you from behind the scenes of season 3. More to come as film develops... Be safe little aliens. Xxx."
When will Sex Education season 3 be released?
If production hadn't been postponed, we could have assumed season three would follow a similar pattern to series one and two, and land on screen in January 2021. The cast first started teasing filming and script readings for season 2 in May 2019, before Netflix released the series in full on January 17th 2020. We hoped that meant the third season would land mid 2021, but it's looking more like the end of the year, now.
Do we have a Sex Education season 3 trailer yet?
Unfortunately not, but you'll be the first people we tell when there is!
What happened in Sex Education season 2?
At the beginning of season two, viewers joined Otis and his new found masturbation addiction as he planned to have sex with girlfriend Ola for the first time. After battling to come to terms with his mum's relationship with Ola's father - and the fact Maeve still likes him - he eventually goes on to lose his virginity to Ruby, one of the school’s popular girls.
The final scenes see him realising the error of his ways and sending Maeve an emotional voicemail – only for it to be deleted by Isaac before she even knows it exists. What does season three hold for their will-they-won't-they future?
