Selena Gomez posted some stills from her new music video for Rare this week and eagle-eyed fans spotted a new tattoo on the back of her arm.

It’s the first time her new ink has been visible and this isn’t just any tattoo, it marks a pretty special date.

The numbers - so she explains in an interview with Capital FM late last year - represent the date she had her kidney transplant in 2017.

Although we’re yet to get a close-up look at the tattoo, the first number being a six would suggest the transplant took place in June 2017.

In the interview, Gomez reveals that her friend Francia Raisa, who gave her the life-saving kidney, also has the same tattoo.

“There aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me.” She said about her BFF.

“I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis.”

Selena Gomez is one for a sentimental tattoo (the best kind, in our opinion) and this isn’t the first one she has had.

In November 2019 she debuted her new thigh tattoo, a tribute to her father. Again, he has the same tattoo on his thigh.

Matching tattoos are clearly Gomez’s jam, because she also shares another one with her long-time collaborator, Julia Michaels.

They both have arrows on the back of their thumbs which point to each other. A cool way to commemorate their collaborations throughout the years.

Many people say that the best reason to get tattoos is to mark a key event your life.

Selena Gomez isn’t the only celebrity to agree with this train of thought.

Miley Cyrus recently marked her split from Liam Hemsworth with two new tattoos. The first - and biggest - reads: “My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free,” which is a lyric from The Pixies’ song, ‘The Thing’.

She also appears to have had the date 1961 written on her left hand, which is the birth year of her country singer father, Billy Ray Cyrus, who celebrated his 58th birthday recently.

Matt Damon also proved himself the ever-devoted father by getting his four daughter’s names tattooed on his upper arm.

Of course, not all tattoos are made equal.

Last year, one artist decided to get a photo of Ariana Grande tattooed on his thigh.

Ok, it might not be your choice of tattoo but each to his own, right? Except, this wasn’t just any tattoo of Ariana Grande.

The artist had drawn the tattoo himself and it shows Ariana Grande with a massive forehead that appears to be trying to escape her face.

We think we’ll just stick to the commemorative numbers.
