Selena Gomez breaks silence on Karla Sofía Gascón controversy: ‘Some of the magic has disappeared’
Selena Gomez has broken her silence on the recent controversy surrounding her Emilia Peréz co-star Karla Sofía Gascón.
Gascón has been the subject of much criticism after old tweets by the actress were unearthed in which she makes a number of disparaging comments about the Islam community, murder victim George Floyd, and other minority groups.
A post in which she mocks Gomez herself has also circulated, though Gascón has said this post is fake.
The tweet read: “She’s a rich rat who plays the poor bastard whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend [Justin Bieber] and his wife.”

When asked about how she’s dealing with the negative press now surrounding the film, Gomez replied: “I’m good. I’m really good.”
“Some of the magic has disappeared,” she admitted. ” … But I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done. I’m just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”
The coverage resulting from the old tweets has brought both the film and Gascón’s prospects for success at the upcoming Academy Awards into question.
Following the controversy, Gascón gave an interview to CNN en Español, reiterating her remorse but confirming she will not withdraw from the Oscar race. She stated: “I have been judged, condemned, sacrificed, crucified, and stoned without a trial and without the option to defend myself.”
She added: “I have not committed any crime, nor have I harmed anyone.”
The interview received mixed reactions, with some accepting her apology and others questioning its sincerity.
Gascón is currently nominated for Best Actress, whilst the film is nominated for Best Film and her co-star Zoe Saldaña is nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Saldana also recently won Best Supporting Actress at the Critics Choice Awards though some outlets, including Variety, are now predicting that Wicked star Ariana Grande may pip her to the post at the Oscars.
