A Secluded Mid-Century Home in the Mountains Above Malibu Hits the Market for $2.6 Million

Cory Buckner has made a name for herself restoring historical homes all over the Los Angeles area. Most notably, the architect was tapped back in 2006 to fix up a spectacular 1959 A. Quincy Jones–designed property in Beverly Hills for Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who reportedly sold it following their 2013 divorce to music producer Dr. Luke. Now, another mid-century residence that also received a major Buckner upgrade, this one over in the Santa Monica Mountains between Calabasas and Malibu, has hit the market.

Asking a speck under $2.6 million, the Stunt Road digs sit on a sprawling five acres in the mountainous Monte Nido enclave adjacent to the popular hiking trails of the Cold Creek Canyon Preserve and is protected by a 30-acre conservation easement that permanently prevents further development near the parcel.

The living room spills onto a large terrace with 270-degree mountaintop views.

“The landscape is adorned with oak woodland, native wildflowers, and a rare redshank grove, creating a truly enchanting setting,” notes the listing, which is being represented by Nili Hudon of Compass and Tracy Bunetta with Sotheby’s International Realty.

Originally built in the 1960s, the home underwent a total reconstruction in 1989 after it succumbed to fire. Today, you’ll find three bedrooms and two baths spread across roughly 2,500 square feet of clean-lined and light-filled living space. Hallmarks of mid-century modern style include rich hardwood floors, stylish clerestory windows, and oversized glass doors. The main living area is outfitted with a fireplace, the retro-style kitchen incorporates flat-front cabinets and a large deck provides unobstructed views over the rugged landscape.

The kitchen is equipped with simple wooden cabinets, two sinks and wraparound views.

The abode relies on passive solar house principles and makes use of an airflow system that not only promotes natural ventilation throughout but also reduces the need for air conditioning and heating. There’s also an earth-sheltered—or partly underground—studio space that’s soundproof and could potentially offer protection from a natural disaster such as a wildfire, and the land has plenty of extra space to add horse stables or a private glamping site with an Airstream trailer. Per the listing, the home can be divided into two separate units with indoor-outdoor living on both levels.
