The Seattle Penthouse That Inspired Christian Grey’s ‘Fifty Shades’ Home Just Hit the Market
Fans of Fifty Shades of Grey can now channel Christian Grey in all his glory, as the ritzy penthouse that inspired the billionaire businessman’s fictional home in the erotic romance film trilogy has just popped up for sale at the Escala residential tower in downtown Seattle, just minutes from Pike Place Market, for $11.5 million.
Though the property from the movies starring Jamie Dornan isn’t actually available—that residence with its infamous red room was an elaborate set constructed at North Shore Studios in Vancouver—it’s loosely based on this high-floor aerie that British author E.L. James found online while doing research for her series of books that were later adapted for the big screen. However, the exterior of the building and its rooftop, sans the helipad, were used for establishing shots.

Records show this particular residence was acquired by Oracle senior vice president Clay Magouyrk and his then-wife Seniha Koksal in 2019 for $9 million. Subsequently remodeled in collaboration with NB Design Group, the three-bedroom, four-bath unit is spread across half of the 30th floor of the 31-story building and offers almost 5,200 square feet overlooking sweeping views of the Space Needle and Puget Sound. There are also two covered terraces warmed by gas fire pits that are ideal for alfresco lounging and entertaining.
A private elevator opens into an entry vestibule, which flows to an open-plan great room holding a combined living and dining area anchored by a seated wet bar that can be shut off from an adjacent office via pocketing glass-paneled doors. A sleek walnut-clad kitchen is outfitted with a Moroccan tile backsplash, an eat-in island, and Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, while a teal-hued butler’s pantry tucked around the corner is accessible to a utility room equipped with another wet bar, dual washers and dryers, and a service entrance. And secluded off by itself is a spacious primary suite, which features a separate lounge area, a showroom-style closet, and an elevated bath spotlighted by a glass-enclosed wet room sporting a soaking tub and shower.

Per the listing held by Phil Greely of The Agency Seattle, the new owner will pay a hefty $5,322 monthly HOA fee for the privilege of living in the building, where its many premium amenities include a 24-hour concierge, a fitness center with two pools and a spa, a wine room, a rooftop terrace warmed by a fireplace, and four parking stalls.
The Escala building was completed in 2009, and this penthouse first traded hands in 2010 for $5.9 million, according to Mansion Global, which first reported the listing. In 2016, a year after Fifty Shades of Grey was first released, the unit sold for $8 million. Shortly after the third movie in the trilogy came out in 2018, it returned to the market for $11.5 million. Magouyrk, who bought it a year later, has since relocated to Nashville, where Oracle is building a 65-acre campus to house its world headquarters.
