A plane journey is a great time to finish off that craft project you've been working on thanks to very few distractions and limited access to the internet. However, you might be wondering whether it's actually possible to take your scissors or knitting needles on a plane. If you like to keep up with your beauty routine, chances are you've also wondered if you're allowed to take nail scissors on board a plane.

Well, we've done some digging to find out whether your next holiday travel day could be the perfect time to get crafting...

It's worth bearing in mind that it's best to check in advance with the airport and airline you're travelling from whether you can bring certain items through security and onto the plane if you're in any doubt.

Leaving it until you reach the airport could result in items being confiscated that you'll be unable to get back. It's also worth considering if you have a particularly precious project you're working on, or some special equipment that has sentimental value, you'd probably be best leaving it at home to help avoid damage or loss.

UK rules on taking scissors on a plane

So, to answer the question of whether you can bring scissors on a plane it really depends on the type of scissors you're bringing and which bag you plan to carry them in (either in the hold or in hand luggage). According to gov.uk's guidance, the hand luggage restrictions at UK airports are as follows:

  • If you have small scissors (with blades no longer than 6cm) then these are allowed both in your hand luggage and in a hold bag

  • If your scissors are large (defined as blades longer than 6cm) then these are allowed in your hold luggage but you must check this with your specific airline prior to your flight. These scissors are not allowed in hand luggage, however.

  • Round-ended or blunt scissors are allowed in both hand luggage and hold (checked in) bags.

If you're unsure, it's generally best to leave the scissors at home if they're not necessary, and remember that airports in different countries may well have different rules for your return journey so it's always advisable to check in advance if in any doubt.
