Scarlett Johansson picks out-of-this-world name for her baby son

Watch: Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost reveal their newborn's baby name.

Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost have picked the coolest baby name for their son - Cosmo.

The couple revealed on August 18th that they'd welcomed their first child together, a little boy, with Jost sharing the happy news of the new arrival on Instagram.

"Ok ok we had a baby. His name is Cosmo. We love him very much." He then asked for privacy and jokingly told people to check in with his Saturday Night Live co-star Michael Che with any inquiries.

Johansson, 36, is already mother to a daughter, Rose Dorothy, seven, with French journalist ex-husband Romain Dauriac, so naming her second child Cosmo is something of a departure from her daughter's much more traditional moniker.

According to website Nameberry, Cosmo is of greek origin and means "order, beauty", while Baby Names says the name is of English descent and means “order.”

Baby Name Wizzard says Cosmo is the English form of the name Cosimo, introduced to Britain in the 18th century by the Scottish nobleman the second Duke of Gordon, who named his son and successor after his friend Cosimo III de' Medici.

More recently the name has been garnering more likes from mums and dads-to-be keen to tap in on a craze for out-of-this-world space-inspired names.

One of the biggest trends in baby names in recent years is giving your offspring an inter-galactic moniker, with parenting site Channelmum.com revealing that over half (51%) of parents-to-be turning to space for name-spo.

The names Luna, Stella and Nova are all expected to be popular for baby girls, while Orion for boys is also predicted to see a spike.

“Space names are a good way to look to the heavens and remind us all that there is more to life than the events happening on earth,” said ChannelMum founder Siobhan Freegard.

And experts predict Cosmo will continue to rise in popularity now that it has the celebrity baby name seal of approval.

"We all heard it on "Seinfeld" as the long-concealed first name of Kramer," Nameberry explains on their website. "Now some pioneering parents, like Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost, are embracing this expansive Greek name, which makes a creative and cool choice for a baby.

"Influential celebrity couple Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost chose it for their son, born in 2021, which will likely drive Cosmo up in popularity."

Johansson and Jost first met in 2010 when Johansson appeared on 'Saturday Night Live' but didn't begin dating until 2017, she later hosted the show again in 2019 telling the audience in her monologue: "This place means so much to me. I have so many friends here and I met the love of my life here." Aww.

The couple went on to marry in October in a small, private ceremony in New York State, following their May 2019 engagement.

Rumours of the actor's pregnancy first started swirling in early July, after Johansson missed several promotional events for her Marvel flick 'Black Widow'.

However, no real confirmation came until just a few days ago when Jost let it slip in one of his comedy shows that he and his wife were expecting.

Neither Johansson nor Jost has given any more info on the birth, so we don't know exactly when little Cosmo put in an appearance, and knowing how private the couple are it may be some time before we catch a glimpse of the new arrival.

In the meantime we seem to have fallen down a space baby names rabbit hole.

Welcome to the world baby Cosmo!
