Krampus, the terrifying half-goat, half-demon character is rooted in German folklore.

According to the traditional tale, the night of December 5 belongs to Krampus, known as Krampusnacht - Christmas eve, if you will.

On this night, the dark, horned figure does his rounds, seeking out children who have misbehaved during the year. He beats them with his bundle of birch sticks or whip made of horse hair and imprisons them in his underworld lair ‘til the following Christmas.

For the lucky children who survive the night, December 5 brings Christmas day and St Nicholas bearing gifts…and deliverance from the fiery underworld, of course.

If the tale itself wasn’t enough to terrify the life out of the poor wee sprogs, Krampusnacht is actually celebration in the real world.

Party-goers dress up as devils, witches and Krampus himself. Bearing fiery torches and clanging cow bells, the revellers take to the streets in a parade. They drink, chase spectators, thwack them with sticks and generally scare adults and children alike.

So the moral of the story here is: Krampus for parents = smashing time at Christmas/well-behaved kids though the year, Krampus for kids = scarred for life.
