This Santa drawing is easier to do than it looks

If you like to make Christmas cards and festive crafts, there's one person who you will try to create – Santa Claus! And in this guide, we'll show you how to draw Santa – perfect for whatever project you're working on.

Our Santa drawing, created by illustrator Alice Mollon, is a chic depiction of Father Christmas, complete with Santa hat and outfit, his classic beard and a sack full of presents.

"I like to bring attention to his big round belly by making the legs a little undersized," she says. "To give him a friendly appearance, make sure his hat is at a nice jaunty angle, and perhaps try adding some rosy cheeks, too!"

In the video above and in her written step-by-step instructions, below, Alice takes you through every stage of drawing Santa with simple explanations for how to recreate her drawing.

For the best results, Alice recommends drawing Santa in pencil first, so you can correct any mistakes, before going over the outline with pen and rubbing out the pencil markings.

You don't need any previous drawing or painting experience to draw this Santa – you'll be amazed by how easy the drawing is to build up. It's the perfect project for beginner crafters!

There are so many ways to use your hand-drawn Santa. He would look lovely on a Christmas card, Christmas gift tags, or even frame the picture for a cute addition to your Christmas decorations. Or why not create cute personalised place settings at your Christmas table, each with a miniature Santa drawn on them.

How to draw Santa step-by-step

STEP 1

Start off by drawing a medium circle for the head, one third of the way down the page. Draw a smaller circle for the nose inside this circle, slightly to the right of centre.

STEP 2

For Santa’s belly, draw a large curve coming out of the right-hand side of the head, starting from just below his nose. Using his head as a reference, make this belly line about three heads high.

STEP 3

On the other side, place your pencil a little way out from the left of the head and one head height down. From here, draw a straighter line down to the level of the line you’ve drawn on the other side of the body.

STEP 4

Halfway down this line, draw a small circle (a little bigger than the nose). This circle should touch the line and will be his hand on his hip.

STEP 5

Draw the right hand on the other side of the body, lower than the left hand and slightly hidden behind the belly.

STEP 6

Coming out of the left-hand side of the head, starting from the same level as the top of the right shoulder, draw a curved ‘C’ shape for his arm and bent elbow, going down to meet his left hand.

STEP 7

Draw a curve on the other side for his right arm, just peeking out from behind his belly.

STEP 8

Close off the bottom of his coat with a line going across from the left to the right.

STEP 9

Draw two little sausage shapes for his legs. Make these about one and a half heads high. Leave a gap between them the same width as the legs themselves.

STEP 10

Draw his little boots, either freehand, or by joining together a vertical rectangle a little bit taller than his hands, and a right-angled triangle half this height.

STEP 11

Begin his beard with a little moustache – or flattened M shape – just under his nose. Extend the moustache line, curving it upwards on each side to meet the upper edges of his face. Draw Santa’s beard, starting from the top of the moustache line on each side and going down over his belly.

Now it’s time for a Santa hat. On top of his head, draw a little triangle with a rounded top for his hat (this should be about as tall as his head). Angle this slightly to the left. Draw a straight line going from the top of the triangle towards his shoulder beneath and add a pompom on the end.

STEP 13

For Santa’s sack, draw a large pear shape to the floor, coming out from his right hand. Inside, draw a long oval shape for the opening, and fill it with little squares and crosses for wrapped presents.

STEP 14

Starting from the same height as his left hand, draw a line going across his belly for the top of the belt. Draw another beneath it for the bottom, and a big square buckle in the middle, very slightly to the right. (In line with his nose)

Add any extra details you like – such as some fluff to his cuffs, the bottom of his coat and hat, as well as buttons and shoelaces.
