Sam Thompson and Zara McDermott’s relationship reportedly ‘didn’t recover’ after she admitted to being unfaithful to him while taking part in The X Factor: Celebrity in 2019. The former Love Island star confessed to having a fling with music executive Brahim Fouradi while taking part in the series.

On New Year’s Day is was reported by the MailOnline that the pair had gone their separate ways, and now, a source has claimed to the publication that Sam’s family, including sister Louise, struggled to forgive Zara for the X Factor incident. “Zara and Sam's relationship just never had felt like it was heading for the long haul,” the source claimed.

“They never really recovered from Zara's cheating; most couples would have struggled to last for as long as they did afterwards,” they continued before explaining that Zara had some ‘big making up to do’ with the family when Sam took her back, especially with his older sister Louise.

The source then claimed that although they managed to make it work and had a number of good times together, “it just felt like it was never going to be truly serious.”

OK! has contacted, Louise, Sam and Zara's representatives for comment.

Zara appeared on the X Factor in a band alongside fellow islanders Samira Mighty, Wes Nelson, and Eyal Booker. The one-off series saw former TOWIE star Megan McKenna take the crown.

The star later took to Instagram to confess to the cheating claims, in which she branded her actions “hugely selfish and immature.” The couple had been dating for around 16 months when Sam discovered what had happened. In the same statement, she went on to apologise to Sam as she penned: “I want to apologise to my Sam for everything I have put him through, for the pain, the embarrassment, the anger and the hurt.

“All I want to do is to make this right, and I think the least he deserves is me being honest with myself and all of you. I love you, Sam. Forever x”. The whole ordeal also played out on the E4 reality show, Made In Chelsea.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Sam and Zara had called it quits after five years together. The couple raised eyebrows when they spent the festive season apart, and earlier this week a source claimed to MailOnline: "Sam and Zara have ended their relationship. It's been an incredibly difficult decision for them to part ways, they still care and have a lot of love for each other."

Neither Sam nor Zara have publicly addressed the rumours, although the former Made in Chelsea star took to Instagram on New Year's Eve to express how excited he was for the upcoming year.
