The role of a social media manager for a major supermarket can’t always be that thrilling. Having to deal with a constant drip of customer complaints with a virtual smile on your face has got to take its toll. But one social media bod has given us all the lols with his hilarious responses to a woman who found a worm in her lettuce.

When Leila Daly posted a tongue-in-cheek complaint accusing said worm of causing her to put on 12 stone in weight, she set up Ross, a Facebook account manager for Sainsbury’s, for a brilliant response.

“As you can imagine I was absolutely horrified,” Leila wrote in her Facebook post. “My children started crying, my cats started headbutting the wall in shock, I soiled myself, my husband divorced me, it was complete madness.”

She accused the national chain for making her fat, saying the ensuing chaos after spotting the creepy crawly caused her to eat a burger (which lead her to “instantly gain 12 stone”) instead of the healthier option. Sticking with her dramatic explanation, she then demanded the store cease trading immediately.

“Hang your heads in shame. Fire all your staff. Close down your business. There is no other way.”

Luckily Ross seized upon her sense of humour and responded with some hilarity of his own.

“Hi Leila, what a terrible situation,” he wrote. “That poor worm, munching away on some lettuce, all content with his life. Now he’s playing the starring role in a horror story. I hope you’ve been able to calm the children, selling them the clear benefits of the situation. I mean, worms are easy pets to keep, I assume? Although, a 12 stone weight gain from a burger, that’s quite the achievement. Not at all your standard burger, it sounds amazing. Was it one of ours, as I’d like to try it?”

Going on to offer an alternative solution to the entire chain closing, Ross continued:

“Of course, it’s clear we should hang our heads, and worms certainly don’t belong in lettuce, but as an alternative to closing down and issuing P45s, how about we sort a refund, with maybe a little extra to help feed your new friend and treat yourself to something nice on us? Drop us a PM, we can discuss. Ross”

But Leila wasn’t quite satisfied with the response received, not just yet anyway.

“As for the imminent closure proceedings, I am willing to let you keep your stores if you buy me a Ferrari and a fresh lettuce. If we make a deal I’ll call off my lawyers,” she quipped.

“In terms of my little wormy friend (Jackie Chan), you will be most pleased to hear that he was very much alive when he appeared in my house. We have sent him to live in the garden, however, he has been terrorising the neighbours dog so we are actively seeking a worm foster home,” she continued.

Leila went on to joke that her new worm, Jackie Chan, had some demands should he go on living with the family including a Ferrari, Netflix connection and a worm house in the garden to which Leila suggested Sainsbury’s might like contribute to the increased household bills.

And Ross was on it.

“A fresh lettuce, I could organise. Well, points or a gift card for you to buy one at least. The Ferrari might be a little tricker. How about a packet of Taste the Difference cookies instead, they’re the Ferrari of their field after all?,” he joked.

“Not sure Jackie’s looking for a foster home. Word on the ground is that he’s found a wormfriend, ideal for Netflix and chill, so I don’t think he’s up for a move.”

There were a few more interactions between the pair before Leila revealed that in the end she’d received not only a Sainsbury’s gift card, but also a Netflix gift card and a laminated drawing of a worm for the upset caused.

Just goes to show those churned out corporate spiel type responses aren’t always the way to go. Ross we salute you!
