Ryan Reynolds live-tweeted Green Lantern for the first time and dubbed it ‘not a tragedy’

Ryan Reynolds has live-tweeted his first ever viewing of his infamous DC Comics flop Green Lantern, and come to the conclusion that it’s not actually that bad.

The Canadian actor may have found enormous success as Deadpool in the superhero movies of the same name, but in 2011 he made his comic book adaptation debut with the comparably dismal Green Lantern. The film was savaged by critics and underperformed at the box office, with Reynolds making fun of the movie repeatedly in the years since.

To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, and in collaboration with his gin brand Aviation Gin, Reynolds watched the film for the first time, while live-tweeting along with it. To his surprise, he decided it “ain’t a tragedy”.

The actor initially began by mocking his own performance in the movie. “This protagonist seems reckless but likeable,” he wrote, before adding: “The Christian Bale superhero voice. Who wore it first?”

Reynolds also heaped praise on his co-stars, including Stanley Tucci, Angela Bassett and the late Michael Clarke Duncan. He also jokingly expressed surprise that his wife played his character’s love interest in the film, tweeting: “Hey @BlakeLively is in this movie!!” The pair met on the film’s set, and married in 2012.

“There’s a lot of heavy hitters in the movie,” Reynolds wrote. “Not always used in the right way... but still... heavy hitters.”

The actor also mocked the film’s abundance of toxic-green CGI, and revealed that he still keeps in his possession the ring prop used as the character’s signature weapon.

Ultimately, though, Reynolds appeared to have an epiphany: Green Lantern isn’t actually as bad as he assumed it would be.

“Maybe it’s the Aviation Gin talking, but Green Lantern was nothing to fear!” he wrote. “Hundreds of incredible crew and cast members did amazing work – and while it’s not perfect, it ain’t a tragedy. Next time I won’t wait a decade to watch.”

He continued: “Watching it was not at all what I imagined. I’m normally so hard on myself. But being a decade away from it, made the experience kinda, weirdly, lovely.”

Reynolds, who earlier this year completed a deal to take over the Welsh football team Wrexham, next stars in the action comedy Free Guy. A third Deadpool movie is also in the works. A Green Lantern sequel is not.
