Rod Stewart has been sued for kicking footballs off-stage during shows

Rod Stewart has been sued once or twice for kicking a football into the crowd at his concerts.

The 78-year-old rocker used to regularly kick signed balls into the audience as part of his show, but the stunt has landed him in trouble on a few occasions.

"I got one or two lawsuits. In fact, when I got to the Hollywood Bowl last year, a dear friend who came all the way over to see me got smashed in the face with a ball," he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "It broke his glasses. He's still having operations. It was very upsetting for both of us."

He jokingly told his friend, "You've got to keep your eye on the ball in all sports, mate."

The Maggie May singer has stopped kicking the balls himself and would now only allow female members of his band to throw them out as he believes they are less likely to "hurt anybody".

Rod, who hoped to be a professional footballer when he was a boy, previously admitted that the football gimmick sometimes backfired on his fans after the show.

"People went mad. They would walk out with a football and get mugged outside as they're worth a lot of money," he shared, reports The Sun. "It is extraordinary the lengths people will go to get a hold of a football."

The Celtic FC fan gave the interview to promote his current Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.
