You Can Rent This Fifth Avenue Penthouse Overlooking the Met for $90,000 a Month

At least four of Fifth Avenue’s luxury apartment houses were designed by James E.R. Carpenter, a leading architect of some of New York City’s finest residential buildings in the early 1900s. One of his prewar edifices, which looms over the storied strip at 988 Fifth Avenue, was built in 1925 with just 12 apartments spread over 14 floors. Over the years, the elegant building has housed notable tenants like Watson B. Dickerman, the former president of the New York Stock Exchange, and now, a duplex penthouse at the storied address, available to rent fully furnished for $90,000 a month, could also make you neighbors with the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Upper East Side crown jewel has panoramic vistas of Central Park, including the Jacqueline Onassis Reservoir, as well as the supertall towers along Billionaire’s Row. The penthouse spans 5,500 square feet with three bedrooms and bathrooms, plus a powder room and two landscaped terraces. Along with landmark views, a private sauna, and multiple terraces, perks for residents of the white-glove building include daily housekeeping services.

Inside the chef's kitchen with terrace access at 988 Fifth Avenue
A large skylight floods the stainless steel kitchen with natural light.

An elevator opens into the home’s skylight-topped entry foyer, which leads to a corner living room with a double-sided fireplace shared with the primary bedroom. Walls of floor-to-ceiling glass slide open to a spacious wrap-around terrace with expansive park and city views, making you feel anchored in the heart of the Big Apple. The kitchen is fitted with stainless steel cabinetry and appliances and filled with natural light thanks to a large skylight, while the formal dining room will seat up to eight for a sit-down meal. Both the kitchen and dining room offer access to a landscaped terrace with room for loungers.

There are two bedrooms on the main floor. The smaller suite has five closets, a private bath with a marble shower, and direct terrace access, while the larger primary suite is kitted out with a fireplace, an office niche and a spacious bath. In the custom-fitted dressing room, a spiral staircase winds up to an indoor-outdoor gym that includes a windowed sauna with an east-facing view.

All three bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling glass that slides open to planted terraces.

Take the staircase off the dining area to the upper level, where a third bedroom and a bathroom are found, along with a meandering and lushly landscaped terrace that offers multiple seating areas, an outdoor shower (one of three outdoor showers!), and, below a classic wooden water tower, an open-air pavilion with a wet bar. And, of course, that’s all in addition to the extraordinary views over the roof of the Met.

Housekeeping is available from Monday through Friday, plus the building has fresh flowers installed weekly by a local florist. Madison Avenue’s luxury shops and hotspots like Bemelman’s Bar are also just a stone’s throw away for entertainment. Erin Boisson Aries and Dustin Crouse of the Erin Boisson Aries team at Douglas Elliman hold the listing.
