Bridget Jones star Renée Zellweger has landed the lead role in Max's upcoming legal thriller Jane Smith.

The new series, based on the bestselling novel 12 Months to Live by James Patterson and Mike Lupica, is currently in development at the streaming service with Ozark's Miki Johnson onboard as writer and showrunner (via Deadline).

Zellweger will star as the titular defence attorney, who resides in the Hamptons and is described as "brilliant, tough and darkly funny".

All Jane has ever cared about is winning, but her life is suddenly turned upside down when she is diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour the day before the biggest case of her career.

The official synopsis continues: "While the investigation becomes more dangerous and deeply personal, Jane refuses to let her death sentence stop her from solving this case."

Zellweger will also executive produce the series alongside Johnson and Carmela Casinelli for Big Picture Co, with Patterson also serving as an executive producer for his production company James Patterson Entertainment.

Elsewhere, Zellweger is currently filming the upcoming fourth Bridget Jones film, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, which was announced earlier this year.

Hugh Grant is also reprising his role as Daniel Cleaver for the new instalment, alongside Sarah Solemani, Sally Phillips, Shirley Henderson and James Callis as Bridget's friends Miranda, Sharon, Jude and Tom.

Mad About the Boy will also feature some new cast members, including Now You See Me's Isla Fisher, Anatomy of a Scandal's Josette Simon, The Last of Us's Nico Parker, I Hate Suzie's Leila Farzad, Doctor Strange's Chiwetel Ejiofor and One Day's Leo Woodall.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy will be released on 14 February, 2025.
