Pyjamas In Public: When Is It Acceptable To Wear Loungewear As Daywear?

Luxury pyjamas broke out of the bedroom years ago. And it’s not just a trend for women: Both Marc Jacobs and his models donned luxe loungewear on the Louis Vuitton catwalk in 20113. [Photo: Rex]

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock this past week, you’ll know that pyjamas have been in the news a whole lot. Namely because teachers have said that they don’t want mums wearing them to drop off their kids at school anymore.

But fashionistas will know that pyjamas as daywear have actually become pretty mainstream in the past few years.

Inspired by the glam loungewear of the 1920s and Coco Chanel, the street style trend has become more and more popular with designers incorporating their theme into their ready-to-wear collections and celebrities dressing down in the comfortable attire on a fairly regular basis.

The likes of Selena Gomez has donned luxe loungewear to strut around the streets of Paris in and Kim Kardashian even had a baby shower where all of her guests turned up in their jammies.

And if celebs (and indeed women with pockets deep enough to afford the fashionable silk co-ords luxe labels are creating) can get away with rocking these look during the day, then why can’t busy mums?

Gomez wore silk pajamas out in Paris – and looked phenomenal. Designed by Derek Rose London, the starlet teamed the navy blue PJ set with straight hair and vampire red lipstick, giving a whole new meaning to the #IWokeUpLikeThis hashtag.

And she’s not the only one. Rihanna’s worn pyjamas out on numerous occasions and Rita Ora’s been spotted in the relaxed get-up, too.

The key to wearing pyjamas by day is a sense of humour - and finding a way to dress up the ensemble (which, perhaps is the element that mums on the school run are skipping). Teaming the look with a paid of heels or a lick of lippy will instantly take the look from slouchy nightwear to sleek daywear, with barely any effort.
