Princess Eugenie is sharing more details about her scoliosis journey—including how her mom, Sarah Ferguson, helped her come to terms with her condition.

The 34-year-old shared a sweet photo of herself being helped by her mom outside of a car when she was little, sharing that her mother caught her condition early when she was a child.

“I was lucky enough to get the help I needed at 12 years old,” Eugenie said. “I thank her so much for that and also thank her for the confidence to be proud of my scar.”

Eugenie, who is the cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry, said that her mom “removed all the stigma around having scoliosis for me by confidently showing people what I’d been through.”

“It took all the fear and anxiety out of being different at such a young age,” she continued. “I am forever grateful and wish everyone to be proud of their scars.” Eugenie ended her post by tagging #scoliosisawarenessmonth.

Her mom wrote this in the comments. “I am so touched by this and in awe of you. I hope this inspires young people to own their scars and life’s journey as you have so beautifully done. ❤️”

Eugenie showed off her scar from corrective spinal surgery in late June with a photo of herself at her 2018 wedding, taken from behind.

“I just wanted to share my scar and encourage anyone out there who’s gone through something similar to share theirs with me,” she wrote in the caption. “Let’s be proud of our scars!”

Eugenie underwent corrective surgery when she was 12, per Hello, and she’s been outspoken advocate for the scoliosis community as an adult. She’s currently a patron of the Scoliosis Support & Research charity organization, as well as the The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Charity.
