Rumours surrounding Prince Harry’s relationship with American actress Meghan Markle have been flying over the past week. Turns out those rumours were true.

This morning, Kensington Palace issued a statement “about the harassment currently being experienced by Meghan and her family.”

The lengthy statement explains how Prince Harry has “never been comfortable” with the furore surrounding his private life and that a line has been crossed.

Meghan Markle, who is described as “his girlfriend” of a few months, has reportedly been suffering a torrent of abuse ranging from tabloid smears to sexist and racist comments along with her family and friends being hounded by the media to get stories on past relationships.

“Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her,” the statement continues. “This is not a game – it is her life and his.”

“He has asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done.”

Publicly speaking out about a new relationship is an unusual move for a royal but it’s easy to see why Prince Harry felt the need. Perhaps it’s time to give the couple their privacy.
