Popular baby names at risk of going 'extinct' in 2025 include surprising royal titles - full list
Baby names go in and out of popularity depending on various factors. Celebrities are a big influence - if an A-lister is rising in prominence or has named their child something particularly unique, we may see a surge in that name.
The same way that names can grow in favour, they can also fall out of favour. In fact, a top US parenting website has noted that some monikers may be fazed out completely this year - a daunting prospect for some.
BabyCenter analyse the biggest trends that shake up the name rankings list each year, and recently drew out the ones that fell the furthest in 2024 - and the results may shock you.

BabyCenter noticed a fall in boy names ending in '-aden' last year, and it seems those names are continuing to fall, with Jaden falling 162 spots. The name last shone in 2002 - showing it might be two decades out of date.
Perhaps contrary to recent reporting, Royal names are taking a dip. Princess Beatrice recently gave birth to a baby girl called Athena, and there was speculation that there would be an uptick in the name.
However, Catherine, Anne, Phillip, Albert, and Edward – all names of British royal family members in recent history – each fell more than 100 spots. Catherine took the biggest hit, though, dropping 221 spots.
If you're considering a more retro name for your child, it may be a blessing or a curse to hear that names from the '80s and '90s are not that sought-after anymore.
Jamie, which was a top-100 name from 1974 until 1996, is our top-falling girl name of 2024, dropping down a significant 320 spots.
Other Millennial girl names going out of style are Erin, Kelsey, Chelsea, Kendra, and Alexis. Plus, Taylor – which was a top-100 boy name from 1988 until 1997 – fell 199 spots for boys.
Again, maybe surprising considering the dominance of Taylor Swift in the pop-sphere, and the massive cult following she has accumulated over the years which might have pushed fans to name their babies after her.
While some nickname-names are more popular than ever today – Ellie and Liam were both in BabyCenter's top 10 in 2024 – other nicknames are fading into obscurity.
Liv (short for Olivia, the No. 1 girl name for the past four years) is down 257 spots for girls, and Billy (short for William) is down 167 for boys. Other nickname-names on the outs include Katie for girls and Danny and Andy for boys.
