Piers Morgan has ended his quarrel with US President Donald Trump after the president had unfollowed him on Twitter.

Speaking on ITV's This Morning programme on Monday, Morgan said he still considered Trump ‘a close friend’ after they spoke on the phone ahead of the US election.

The pair have been friends for years but had fallen out after Morgan publicly criticised Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Morgan said Trump called him after seeing him speak on an American TV programme, and the two had a half an hour phone conversation over the weekend.

“He knows how critical I've been about the coronavirus,” Morgan said. “I called him out, and I said you should start refollowing me on Twitter because he unfollowed me when I told him to shut the bleep up about coronavirus... and it all got pretty unpleasant,” he said.

“But he saw me talk about it and he called me up, and you know I still consider him to be a friend, I've known him a long time.”

Morgan has blasted Trump’s coronavirus response several times in the past.

In early October, after Donald Trump tested positive to the coronavirus, Morgan said he was “an anti-role model”, “tone-deaf” and a “super spreader”. He also branded the president “reckless” for getting into a car with his security entourage and “put his secret service’s lives at risk. People who risk their lives for you every minute of every day.”

On his Good Morning Britain show in June, Morgan also called Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani “completely mad” for defending one of the president’s inflammatory tweets amid the Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

Morgan said Trump still isn’t following him on Twitter.
