Given the explosion of Omar Apollo‘s music career over the past few years, it’s understandable that singer has amassed a number of celebrity supporters on his journey to pop stardom. One such fan is The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal.

In fact, Pascal is such a fan that he even collaborated with Apollo on a song from the singer’s latest album God Said No.

Speaking to Attitude for Apollo’s cover story in the September/October issue – out now – the Mandalorian actor spilled all about the pair’s song together, aptly titled ‘Pedro’.

“As friends we relate to each other’s sensitivities” – Pedro Pascal

“He asked me to share a voice note with him about experiencing grief,” Pascal said.

“As friends we relate to each other’s sensitivities. So, I shared a little about an experience I thought would resonate with him.”

Pascal had only glowing things to say about his Grammy-nominated pal. “I would describe Omar as a true talent, an artist,” he gushed. “Fierce, determined, sensitive and a good time.”

‘Pedro’ is a tender lullaby housed towards the end of God Said No, and is indicative of the emotional honesty that Apollo has become so known for. It’s something the singer has harnessed throughout his music, but which perhaps belies his multifaceted personality.

“People listening to my music are like, ‘Damn, what the fuck?’ They’ll see me having a good time because I am,” he told Attitude. “But it’s funny because my music comes out like this well of grief, sadness and longing.”

Still, when Apollo writes a song like ‘Pedro’ or ‘Glow’, which closes out God Said No, it can feel cathartic.

“Before I release [a song] I don’t show anyone but a few ears that lend themselves to the process, because the process is the most important thing,” he explained. “That’s the part that’s celebrated after it’s out. That isn’t up to me. That’s up to how it’s received. ‘Oh, who hurt him’ That’s irrelevant because it’s been let go of by the time the song is out.”

‘Pedro’ isn’t the only collaboration on God Said No. The album also features Sudanese-Canadian poet Mustafa on the ballad ‘Plane Trees’. And, if collaborating with Hollywood star Pascal isn’t enough, Apollo told Attitude that he has a few other dream collabs in mind.

“Troye [Sivan]’s cool. Troye’s sick,” he said of the artists he’d like to work with. “His album was great. La Cruz, a Venezuelan guy, he’s amazing. He’s gonna really pop off. He’s in the reggaeton space, but he’s doing it in the most elegant queer way.”

Fingers crossed for the future, then.
