Nicole Richie dyes hair shocking silver for punk-themed Met Ball 2013

Nicole Richie proved she has a soft spot for fancy dress at the Met Ball 2013.

The socialite and fashion designer went all-out for the punk theme at this year's gala, showing off a striking white-silver hairstyle and relying on plenty of hairspray to give a nod to the traditional punk mohawk.

Nicole, 31, hid her usually caramel locks under lashings of silver hair colour, which contrasted rather jarringly with her deep, orange-hued fake tan and dark red lips.

Perhaps borrowing from her husband Joel Madden's influence as singer in pop punk band Good Charlotte, Nicole was one of the most unusual  beauty looks for the night, which has quite an achievement, given the striking hair and beauty choices made by many of the A-listers.

Showing no problem ditching her more usual bohemian beauty and fashion look, Nicole wore a punky earful of piercings but clearly wasn't keen to go the whole hog when it came to skin tone. Instead she piled on the fake tan, rarely adopted in the true punk period.

We feel pale-and-interesting fan and queen of punk fashion Vivienne Westwood would not have approved.
Nicole's deep maroon-red lips were reportedly created using a blend of Chanel Rouge Allure in Rouge Noir and MAC Lipmix in Black and Fuchsia, mixed by her make-up artist Beau Nelson.

She treated her fans to some behind the scenes snaps on instagram, showing off a maroon and gold manicure and the interesting hair dye concoction used to silver-up her locks. For her outfit, Nicole went for a Topshop, white and silver column dress.

Top hairstylist Errol Douglas is a fan. “Two words: It works!  For me, given the punk theme and Nicole’s young, fresh skin, this is the best reveal of the night.  Morticia meets homecoming queen in a really original way. Classic, demure dress with a complete attitude of a hair choice – the colour and crop are a hit”

The event was held by the Costume Institute Gala celebrating Punk: Chaos to Couture. And she wasn't the only celeb embracing the theme. January Jones, Anne Hathaway and Ginnifer Goodwin all rocked striking hairstyles and unusual beauty looks.
