Watch: New Zealand influencer sends UK apology after she filmed herself biting into a Terry's chocolate orange
A woman from New Zealand has apologised to the UK after filming herself biting into a whole Terry's Chocolate Orange, rather than eating it in segments.
Jazz Thornton, an influencer and mental health activist from Auckland shared a video of herself to TikTok trying some confectionery and foodstuffs from the UK, which included the popular chocolate treat.
The clip showed her inspecting the confectionary and all of its segments, before seeming somewhat confused about how you eat it.
Instead of the typical method of banging it on the table and breaking it up into individual segments, Thornton decides to take a bite out of the whole thing, causing some of the pieces to break away in her mouth.
After sharing the clip, numerous British TikTok users flooded the comments section, explaining that her method of eating the sweet treat was completely wrong, with some joking about how offended they were.
"Someone taking a full bite of a Terry's Chocolate Orange is one of the most cursed things," one user wrote, while another added: "YOU DID NOT JUST BITE A CHOCOLATE ORANGE."
Another person claimed to be upset about how Thornton referred to the confectionary: "I’m more offended she’s said Terry's Orange Chocolate. No it’s a Terrys Chocolate Orange!!!"
Realising her video had caused something of a stir on the other side of the world, Thornton filmed an apology video addressed to the "entirety of the United Kingdom" for doing something "very offensive".
"I am here to make an apology video to the entirety of the United Kingdom," she said: "I did something yesterday that was very offensive and I didn't know that it was very offensive until you guys were calling me out on it."
In her defence, Thornton, who is famous in New Zealand for winning Dancing With The Stars, said she didn't know you had to smash it before you ate it.
She pointed out that she could not find anything on the packaging where it explained how to eat the chocolate in the proper fashion.
"This was something that you all collectively knew, but I did not know," she continued.
After issuing her apology, the influencer decided to have another go at eating the treat, this time using the British method of whacking it onto a table.
"Oh, I get it," she adds. "I do hope the United Kingdom can find themselves to forgive me for biting into that thing. I realised my mistake as soon as I got into it, and I felt the slices in my mouth. But I didn't know sorry."
When later asked about the backlash she received she said she hadn't realised how much of a big deal Terry's Chocolate Orange was in the UK.
"Apparently it’s quite a big deal haha," she said. "I need time to recover. The Brits need time to forgive."
