Netflix announces release date for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's documentary series
Netflix has announced an update on Prince Harry's highly anticipated documentary series. The five-part docuseries, crafted by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's own production company, is set to make its debut on December 10, as revealed this Wednesday, November 20.
The much-anticipated series, titled POLO, will delve into the lives of polo players both "on and off the field as they compete in the high-stakes US Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida", Netflix describes. The streaming service promises: "Through fierce rivalries and intense training, viewers will get an unprecedented glimpse into the dedication and skill required to compete at the sport's highest level."
It's widely known that the Duke of Sussex, aged 40, has long been a polo enthusiast and actively participates in the sport. "From a young player pushed to his limits by his demanding father, to a former golfer who's made significant sacrifices for the love of the sport, to the father-son duo widely regarded as the greatest players of all time - they all face intense personal and professional challenges as they vie for the coveted title," Netflix further detailed. This latest news comes after Netflix's initial announcement of the documentary series back in September. The statement highlighted: "POLO is a new documentary series that follows elite global players and offers an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of the sport. From Archewell Productions and Boardwalk Pictures."
Archewell Productions, founded by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, is gearing up to launch a new programme as part of their multi-year agreement with Netflix, which was inked back in 2020. Meghan is set to host her very own non-fiction series that will celebrate "the joys of cooking, gardening, entertaining and friendship", reports the Daily Record.
Netflix has tantalised fans with an early glimpse of the documentary, releasing four still images, including one featuring three polo players on horseback and another capturing two competitors in a sprint with mallets in pursuit of the ball. Although Harry and Meghan might pop up in the show, they won't be the central figures.
In April, news broke that Harry had struck a deal with Netflix to create a documentary series centred on the world of polo. The series aims to "provide viewers unprecedented access to the world of professional polo," as per a statement from that time.
"Known primarily for its aesthetic and social scene, the series will pull the curtain back on the grit and passion of the sport, capturing players and all it takes to compete at the highest level," the announcement detailed. Harry's comrade and polo player, Ignacio 'Nacho' Figueras, is collaborating closely with the Duke on this venture.
In a conversation with People about the forthcoming polo-centric series, Figueras revealed: "Prince Harry and I have talked about polo for years. The production company is incredible, and Netflix has a huge platform to reach the biggest hearts in the world. I am happy to be involved and think this is a great opportunity for the sport."
