Net-a-Porter’s Modern Artisan collection is a lesson in quiet luxury
The very best fashion investments are those made with longevity in mind: a buzzy trend-led piece may be good for a seasonal fling, but beautifully crafted classics are forever.
If you’re hoping to take a more mindful approach to the September wardrobe refresh this year, Net-a-Porter’s latest Modern Artisan capsule is just the thing. Back for a third instalment, this collaborative project with The King’s Foundation sees the work of six emerging artisans – Arielle Uno Ekwang, Daisy Gray, Georgia Wintle, Jessica Horton, Sarah Jane Sleeba and Flavia Nisto – landing on the virtual Net-a-Porter shelves, each piece a showcase of true artisanal skill.
These pieces are the product of a unique and necessary training programme supported by the etailer, in which aspiring designers immerse themselves in the art of creating luxury products with sustainability and skilled craftsmanship at their heart.
Each piece in the 13-strong capsule was produced by hand at The King’s Foundation’s Dumfries House headquarters on the Scottish coast, where textiles workshops stay true to the well-honed traditional production methods. Naturally, sustainability shines here: dyes were created using plant pigments, the wool is locally sourced (with some even coming from the Dumfries House herd), and hand-finishing techniques ensure every piece is crafted to last.
A louche khaki two-piece suit is dyed using native Scottish heathers, while a chunky cable-knit scarf is spun using ‘The King’s Clip’: fleece from His Majesty’s own flocks. A Romanian hand-smocking technique cinches the waist of a relaxed navy blouse, while fluid satin separates are made from cellulose-based biodegradable satin.
Of course, true sustainability goes further than a piece’s production methods: the end product must stand the test of time in your wardrobe, too. Surely, a cosy, chunky knitted cardigan is something you’ll relish pulling on for years on end, while that minimalist satin slip dress deserves to be the starting point for an endless host of looks, no matter what the whims of the fashion cycle are dictating.
