Mum asked to pay £1,800 to replace cousin's blouse after her baby was sick on it
A new mother was asked to replace her cousin’s £1,800 blouse after her one-month-old baby was sick on it.
Due to the eye-watering price of the garment, she refused to reimburse the cost and posted on Reddit to ask whether or not she was right to.
“I gave birth four weeks ago, and we decided to have a ‘baby ceremony’, where everyone gets to meet our lovely daughter Charlotte,” she wrote. “My cousin Alice and her parents were among the guests.”
The anonymous woman then went on to explain that her cousin has “expensive taste” and doesn’t have anything other than designer clobber hanging in her closet.
In order to afford her luxe lifestyle, her cousin, a banker, still lives with her parents.
But Alice soon learned not to wear her best outfit near children at the woman’s baby ceremony.

“It was Alice's turn to hold the baby and she was happy to at first, but suddenly Charlotte vomited on her. Alice handed Charlotte back to me and ran off crying, and spent the rest of the event crying in the car,” the woman continued.
“I went to see her to apologise but she didn't want to hear any of it. My mum gave her one of her shirts which was too big for her and she felt completely upset and humiliated.”
Following the ordeal, the woman received a call from her mum who explained that she had been on the phone to Alice’s mum (her sister) who wants her to reimburse the cost of the blouse.
But the new mum understandably refused due to the £1,800 price tag.
“At the end of the day we all know what babies can be like,” she emphasised on Reddit.
“She took a risk wearing something so expensive knowing a baby was nearby and unfortunately it backfired. I feel bad for her but it was not my fault. Am I doing the right thing by refusing to pay up?”
The post soon went viral with fellow Reddit users rushing to support the new mother’s decision.
“It's a newborn. Newborns spit up,” one stated. “Don't wear £1,800 shirts around newborns if you can't afford to have them get messy.”
Another agreed with the cousin’s poorly thought out look, adding: “I don’t think it’s the expensive taste that’s an issue. It’s the issue of wearing clothing inappropriate for the situation.”
“You probably shouldn’t wear a vintage Chanel dress to the family backyard barbecue and you probably shouldn’t expect to wear Jimmy Choos at a beach bash in the sand,” they continued. “If you do, you don’t get to get upset with the host if they get ruined.”

A third weighed in on the debate, writing: “Seriously. If you're going to be holding an infant, be ready to be sh**/urinated/vomited on. Babies can't control it.”
Although a number of Reddit users disagreed and argued that the mother should take responsibility for the situation.
“I don't think it's fair to say that the cousin is the a**hole because she likes nice things. I don't think it's fair to say she needs to dress differently to visit a new parent. I think both of those statements actually make you an a**hole,” one commented.
“It wasn't like you asked her to babysit and she wore expensive clothing. According to your description, that's how she dresses. Everyone else showed up and didn't get vomited on, so why would she expect to?”
Another user agreed, highlighting that not everyone understands the risks involved when holding a newborn baby.
“Your kid destroyed her blouse. Most of you say the cousin’s stupidity caused this situation but I don’t think so,” they argued. “Not everyone is well informed about babies and certainly don’t think they will destroy their clothes.”
Others suggested that the mother pay for her cousin to have the blouse dry cleaned but the item is apparently “too ruined”.
